It is to represent the beginning, end, and the different middles of the classical Ashtanga asana sequences. I wanted to create a minimalist expression of the fundamental opening and closing postures in a style that is intended to portray yoga asanas as simple essences and universally felt inner memories. I love to see them stripped down to an almost heiroglyphic alphabet state, rather than representing any ideals of gender, body composition, or physical identity. In November of 2024, my teacher's teacher and the holder of the Ashtanga Yoga lineage passed away very unexpectedly. We held a memorial at our Shala and everyone (everyone) brought flowers. Especially lilies. The entire space was full of beauty, fragrance, and tender heartedness. I plucked and saved one of the lily flowers and pressed it in my flower press. Later in the year, I layered it on top of paper to create an image translated with blue ink in my Risograph. I love that it looks like a lotus! Then, I added another printed layer of a gold circle.
